Carly Simon seemingly shaded her estranged ex-husband James Taylor in a biting new song from her first album of original songs in 18 years, Page Six can exclusively reveal.
“Comes in Waves” — Simon’s highly anticipated 24th studio album that drops Friday — features “Maybe I Never Loved You” as its second track.
“Maybe I never loved you / But anyway, I thought I did,” Simon sings. “I married you, we had a kid / That counts for something.”
The tune takes an emotional turn when she questions her feelings for an ex, whom she never identifies by name.
“Maybe I never loved you / Yes, and maybe I did,” she sings. “And maybe you never loved me / Although God knows, you said you did.”
From there, Simon seems to point out all the times her former partner was actually there for her.
“You came for me those times I hid / I’m so glad you did that,” she continues singing on the track. “And maybe it’s wrong to wonder how everything kind became forbidden.”
Simon questions again whether or not her ex ever loved her before confessing her desire to move forward.
“And maybe it’s best to bury whatever it was we had our fill of,” she sings, before concluding, “Maybe I never loved you / Maybe I always will.”
The “You’re So Vain” singer, 83, was married to Taylor from 1972 to 1983, and they share two kids: Sally Taylor, 52, and Ben Taylor, 49.
Page Six has reached out to Taylor for comment.
The “Let The River Run” artist has been open about her turbulent marriage to the “Fire and Rain” singer, which ended amid his heroin addiction as well as cheating on both sides.
In her 2015 memoir, “Boys in the Trees,” Simon reportedly described their relationship as “far from the idyllic one that the general public reads about.”
Simon admitted in a 2015 interview with Peoplethat she and James, 78, had not talked in more than a decade but that she still loves him.
“I still want to heal him, I still want to make him all right,” she told the outlet at the time. “And I love him so much.”
Simon explained that she didn’t know why Taylor refused to speak to her, but that she learned a lot about herself while writing her memoir.
“My incredible loyalty to him, in spite of the fact that he has treated me without any regard, has been so painful to me for so long,” she said. “But, through the course of writing the book, I really started to understand that I could love and not be loved. And that was the big realization for me, that it doesn’t have to be a two-way street.”
Simon, who was also married to James Hart from 1987 to 2007, has since moved on with longtime partner Richard Koehler.
She was famously linked to several A-list men, including Jack Nicholson, Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens and Warren Beatty — the latter of whom is the subject of her ruthless 1972 hit, “You’re So Vain.”
Simon’s latest melodic diatribe is featured on the deeply personal 12-track album, which she wrote and recorded from her home in Martha’s Vineyard. The album’s single, “Peaches,” debuted last week.
The two-time Grammy-winning artist revealed last month that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and skin cancer.
In a statement to her fans, Simon explained how her new album has helped her amid health struggles.
“Working on the music gave shape to days that did not always have much shape,” she wrote in July. “It gave me somewhere to go without having to leave the room. It reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life.”
“Comes in Waves” will be released this Friday.
